Attendees share what inspired them, plus: We’re already designing the next HR Workshop for 2020
We’ve just completed the final Neuro Speciality HR Workshop of 2019, this time in Cape Town. And, in case you couldn’t make it, attendees share their 8 biggest a-ha moments as we delved into the latest brain-based science for business, people and HR.
But we’re already planning the next public HR Workshop for 2020, and we want you to have your say about it. And, if you can’t wait that long, we’ll tell how you can get a personal introduction to the workshop with Dr Cobus – and even a free coffee!
ABOUT LIFEXCHANGE NEURO HR WORKSHOP 2019
We initially planned to finish the HR Workshop circuit in Gauteng, but the last LifeXchange Solutions Neuro HR Workshop eventually took place in Kloof Street Cape Town – following popular demand from Capetonian businesses after Dr Cobus appeared at the 2019 HR Conference and Expo.
It happened on 17 October 2019 (look out for the new 2020 dates coming soon!), was SABPP accredited and all the business people, HR pros and changemakers who attended received 7 CPD points. The theme was “How to get the best out of people without them feeling like a means to an end”, and it was all about using the latest neuroscience insights for business: Motivating staff, supercharging performance and building effective and trusting teams.
We spoke to some of the attendees, and here are the biggest brain-science for business insights they think everyone should know:
THE 8 BIGGEST NEURO HR WORKSHOP INSIGHTS
1. THE REAL REASON WHY WE MISS THINGS
Ferdinand Nel, County Fair
“The part that stuck with me is how our brains are hardwired to block out certain information, and how that makes us miss things, at the office, in meetings. And the value I got from the workshop is that it just made me more aware and willing to look at things from other people’s perspective.”
And Ferdinand is right because at every workshop LifeXchange designs exciting activities to show just how our minds work. And you’ll be surprised how, with just a little stimulation, even CEOs and finance directors can get a Grade 1 maths sum wrong. And that’s perfectly OK because it’s a natural process in the brain and you can actually control it. See our post on automatic memory recall.
Ferdinand recommends Neuro HR Workshop for: “Anyone involved in management at a company.”
2. IT RE-IGNITES YOUR BRAIN AND PASSION FOR PEOPLE
Elmarie Lambrechts, The Auditor-General of South Africa
“For me, who’s had a lot of training in people and organisational management, this workshop just got those brain cells firing again. Helped me understand and refocus again, thanks to the information and quality interaction and positive energy.”
Elmarie recommends Neuro HR Workshop for: “All the people in a company, but especially your operations teams.”
3. REALISE JUST HOW POWERFUL YOUR BRAIN IS
Mariki Schwiebus, Pepkor
“I just stood at awe at learning the true capabilities of my own and everyone around me’s brains and perceptions.” And it’s very true, we often think of people as dumb or smart, hardworking or lazy, but the truth is that we all have the same potential. Just have a look at our post on how your neurons (brain cells) work and how thoughts work in neural pathways.
Mariki recommends Neuro HR Workshop for: “Everyone should hear this message, inside business and outside.”
4. HOW YOUR RAS IMPACTS YOU IN THE WORKPLACE
Kerry Fair, GLS Consulting
“The fact that people can see and hear different things stood out for me. Understanding how your brain’s Reticular Activating System (RAS) blocks certain information as an evolutionary survival mechanism is remarkable information. I could have gone on listening to Dr Cobus the whole day.”
And she’s referring to one of the most powerful mechanisms in our brains, that, misunderstood, can change people’s entire life and career path. It’s the reason people often miss things at the office or take things in the wrong way. And knowing about the RAS and how it works is probably one of the most important things to know about people in the business world today. See our post on automatic memory recall and LifeXchange’s focus on NeuroManagement.
Kerry recommends Neuro HR Workshop for: “Any business, including everyone in our company. But even in your personal and family life, too.”
5. THE ROOT OF ALL WORKPLACE MISUNDERSTANDING
Elvorne Palmer, Aperson Digital
“I was amazed to learn that your brain is constantly trying to parse every piece of information you get using a similar process to “muscle memory”, learning a skill by repetition, so it can unconsciously recall it later. I didn’t know that your brain does that with everything. It builds biases and beliefs subconsciously out of bits of information you get, and then auto-recalls them later. And that’s what causes all the misunderstandings, low performance – basically all the problems people experience at work.”
Elvorne recommends Neuro HR Workshop for: “Company leadership, or anyone in any leadership position.”

6. VISUALISING THE POSITIVE IS YOUR MOST POWERFUL TOOL
Prakash Ramcharan, Tenacity Financial Services
“For me, Dr Cobus affirmed something I always believed in: That if we punish and reward and coerce, we spend way too much time creating a picture of the negative behaviour. But if you want people to really perform and grow, you need to reinforce the positive. Visualise it. Focus on the positive stuff, and that’s what people will drive you towards.”
Prakash recommends Neuro HR Workshop for: “All my colleagues, and anyone who wants to really understand how to get the right kind of output from their people.”
7. PRACTICAL TOOLS TO USE IMMEDIATELY
Amorei Engelbrecht, ASL Inc
“I’m an industrial psychologist and the best part for me was that this workshop not only gave me insights but also tools to improve myself and get better performance from our people that I could go and use immediately at work the next day.” And it’s true for every workshop LifeXchange does – see our famous NeuroManagement Workshops.
See all our upcoming workshops in February and workshops in March.
Amorei recommends Neuro HR Workshop for: “Any manager at any business, or anyone in a leadership role.”
8. THIS IS THE KIND OF INSIGHT OUR COUNTRY NEEDS AT GOVERNMENT LEVEL
Alida Ventre, DriveMoreSafely.co.za
“As a social and road-safety activist, I was absolutely amazed at the insights we got into human behaviour. I actually want to speak to Dr Cobus, because I want to introduce him to our country’s transport and safety ministers – I believe this behavioural information has huge potential for our country to better understand what’s going on in the minds of our road users, so we can make changes that’ll have a real and lasting effect.”
Alida recommends Neuro HR Workshop for: “All activists in South Africa, and definitely to our country’s leadership, especially our transport minister and all his staff.”
