This week’s essential Management & HR news and updates in under 1 minute
8 December 2020
What employees really want. Cloud payroll. And what 2021 might hold. Here’s the news you should know in HR this week:
NEW IN MANAGEMENT & HR THIS WEEK
SURVEY: WHAT WORKERS WANT FROM THE OFFICE
71% Would like to go back to the office. 51% Want the flexibility to choose when and where they work. And most people don’t want to share desks with others. News site iAfrica.com says they did a survey of workers in SA (although there’s little detail about who, where and how this was conducted), and the results show that workers still want open-plan offices, but with more collaborative spaces designed to build company culture, for coaching and mentoring programmes. See the 6 main points here.
THE IMPORTANCE OF HR TECH ADOPTION
Amid the major shifts that Covid-19 has forced in most companies, Heinrich Swanepoel of payroll company PaySpace says there’s still quite a lot of digital transformation work to be done. He believes that the days of having your own servers in the office should be well and truly over by now, and that includes payroll. From usage-based cloud payroll service to software that offers you more flexibility, it’s important to keep up with the latest in HR Software.
COVID-19 HOTSPOTS: NEW RESTRICTIONS
On 3 December 2020, the SA President declared Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape a hotspot, putting renewed restrictions in place, presumably through the holiday season into the new year: 10pm curfew, all beaches closed, no gatherings allowed etc. See reports here. This after the Metropol saw a resurgence in new cases, accounting for around 30% of total infections in South Africa. Which no doubt causes some heartache for those dependent on the tourism industry in the region.
But there are also Covid-surge fears in the Western Cape, especially in George and parts of the central Karoo (believe it or not!), with even Mosselbay announcing its own renewed measures to prevent another lockdown.
