Energised for growth: After the highly successful Cape Town session, we presented a tailor-made neuromanagement workshop at SA catering group Feedem’s HQ
Positivity. So much energy. And plentiful aha moments. We got even more insights into the practical applications for neuroscience in business at the recent neuromanagement-focused Feedem workshop in Joburg.
“It is absolutely fantastic,” says Charmaine Nel, the inland operations manager of national catering service supplier Feedem’s retirement and industrial sector. “We’re exposed to a lot of training and workshops in our business, but the neuromanagement workshop with Dr Cobus was probably one of the most exciting sessions we’ve had in a long time.”
Here’s what happened during the Feedem workshop in Joburg, how people responded and a little but of info on what Feedem does and how neuromanagement insights have helped their business. Plus: How to get the same for your organisation.
WHO IS FEEDEM?
Employing over 5000 people across various disciplines – from food prep, chefs and waiting staff to cleaning staff and of course professional admin and management and support staff – Feedem has been in the national large-scale catering service supply business for close to 45 years.
Offering specialised food services to everything from schools, hospitals, large corporates like Woolworths and retirement homes, and even doing custom consultation work for restaurants, Feedem has several divisions around the country.
Having such a large footprint with so many diverse and specialised employees all around the country, Feedem needs to stay at the forefront of employee engagement to keep the business running smoothly. And that’s why it made sense for Feedem to get insights into the latest neuroscience for business with a Neuromanagement Workshop by LifeXchange Solutions.
HOW THE FEEDEM WORKSHOP IN JOBURG CAME ABOUT
LifeXchange was first invited to run a neuromanagement workshop at Feedem’s Cape Town offices earlier this year. Then, several mid and senior managers saw the value in our neuroscience insights, saying that the workshop had a huge impact on their language, how they motivate each other, how they view each other and people within the business, and that it helped energise them and renew their focus. See the full report on the first Feedem Neuro Workshop.
The response was so positive in Cape Town that Feedem asked LifeXchange’s Dr Cobus Oosthuizen (PhD Mentoring and Human Behaviour) to bring the same insights to Feedem’s headquarters in Johannesburg.
Being at the head office, this workshop saw a mix of mid- and senior management, from the CEO and COO to various operations and district managers and support staff.
Again, it was mainly the people focused on the administration and business side of things, with Feedem still exploring how to roll the insights out at every level of the company in the future.
WHAT THE FEEDEM NEUROMANAGEMENT WORKSHOP ENTAILED
LifeXchange’s neuromanagement workshops bring the latest brain-based science (neuroscience) into the workplace by first explaining the most up-to-date findings on how our brains work. And then we show practical and exciting ways to use that knowledge in business to better motivate and understand each other – in essence it shows us how to create more sustainable organisations where people can flourish and the business can grow.
And you should never expect a lecture or a talk. These sessions are highly energetic and interactive. The only way to really see how it all comes together is through activities, so many companies also see it as a valuable team-building exercise.
In Feedem’s case, though, there were some awesome and exciting insights.
FEEDBACK ON THE FEEDEM WORKSHOP IN JOBURG
“One of the main things for us was how energetic and exciting the workshop is,” says Charmaine. “There are so many valuable aha moments that I battle to really single out just one – and Cobus helps drive home every insight with a fun activity and anecdotes from his personal experience, so you can clearly see how our minds work and be able to apply it almost immediately.”
Here are some of the key outcomes according to the Feedem team:
One of the main features of the neuromanagement workshop is that it gives you scientific explanations for the things that drive human behaviour in the workplace. And it’s incredibly liberating for a team to learn that there are perfectly rational explanations for all of the things we see and feel every day at the office.
BUT ALSO FEELING MORE IN CONTROL
“At the same time, Cobus also shows you how to control those things better. It was super exciting to learn not only that you can, but also how to speak to yourself and others in a healthy and productive way, to inspire real growth and change,” Charmaine says.
FEELING POSITIVE AND ENERGISED
“And then, of course, everyone in the company is under a lot of pressure, because we have growth plans and targets to reach. And this session just re-energised a lot of us, creating a sense of positivity and drive for the future that’s so important for helping us reach our goals.”
SO, WHAT’S NEXT?
After successful sessions in Cape Town and at the head office in Johannesburg, Feedem wants to bring the same value to its more outlying regions, specifically Durban and Bloemfontein branches.
“Not only that, I think all of us want a little more time with Dr Cobus and to engage with everything LifeXchange has to offer. We’re just looking at how to best practically make that happen,” says Charmaine.
And we at LifeXchange are super excited to see what amazing things Feedem is still going to achieve in the near future.
